Structure and Organization of the Maternelle

In the French education system, Maternelle (kindergarten) is a compulsory three-year program that forms an integral part of primary education: Petite Section (first year), Moyenne Section (second year), and Grande Section (third year). Certified and dedicated teachers, supported by teaching assistants, work closely together to guide and nurture each child’s development. A German teacher regularly provides language instruction in small groups, and a teacher specialized in FLE (French as a Foreign Language) is also available to support non-French-speaking children.

Over the course of three years, children learn and grow together in a nurturing and stimulating environment. Through play-based learning, they explore the world around them, develop language skills, discover early mathematical concepts, strengthen motor coordination, and build self-discipline and self-confidence. Our teachers are trained to deliver structured, engaging, and joyful instruction, drawing inspiration from picture books, traditional French and German celebrations, the rhythm of the four seasons, and enriching school outings that bring learning to life.
